NEW KENSINGTON — With Austin Miele given a little time to rest his ankle, the Mars football team turned to Seth Geyer.

Geyer scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, including a 43-yarder on the first play from scrimmage, to send the Planets to a 56-0 victory over Valley Friday.

Geyer, who left the game early in the third quarter after getting dinged up, finished with 113 yards on 13 carries.

Miele did play and recorded three consecutive carries midway through the second quarter and scored on his final carry from the 1 to give Mars a 21-0 lead.

"We wanted to rest Austin. ... He's fine," said Mars coach Scott Heinauer. "If he needed to play, he could've played.

"I thought Seth did a nice job running the ball. The kids all did a nice job blocking up front," Heinauer added.

Mars' second score was set up when Aaron Lozzi recovered a fumble by Anthony DiCarolis at the Valley 14.

Four plays later, Geyer scored on a 1-yard run with 51 seconds left in the first quarter.

When Miele scored to give Mars (7-1, 5-0) a three-touchdown lead, Valley (0-8, 0-6) tried to grab some momentum when DiCarolis took a reverse handoff on the ensuing kickoff and got to the Mars 48.

Valley worked the ball to the 16, but a 33-yard field goal attempt was blocked.

With the ball placed at the Mars 20, Eric Guzak connected with a wide-open Aaron Lozzi for an 80-yard score to stake Mars to a 28-0 lead with 1:39 before the break.

Guzak and Lozzi hooked up for a 39-yard scoring strike with 9:02 left in the third quarter.

In all, Guzak completed all four of his passes for 169 yards.

"We felt we had to throw the football," said Heinauer. "We haven't thrown it too well the past couple of weeks. We're a run-oriented offense, but we think we can throw the ball."

Mars also received scoring runs of 2 yards from Jason Lozzi, 4 yards from Sam King and 50 yards from Alex Smith.

Mars limited Valley to 123 yards of offense.

"The thing I'm most proud of is the kids fought and worked hard," said Vikings coach Troy Hill. "The kids are giving it their best."

Mars now turns its sights to the showdown with Knoch (8-0, 5-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday. The winner earns the Allegheny Conference title.

"We gave up some yards (Friday), but we made the big plays when we had to," said Heinauer. "We're where we need to be and Knoch is where it needs to be."

Notes: Ryan O'Connor also recovered a fumble, while Josh Pinkerton and Jason Lozzi had interceptions. ... The Planets' lone problem of the night was penalties: 10 for 90 yards, including numerous false start violations, two for unsportsmanlike conduct and a pass interference penalty.
