2nd-half surge lifts Moniteau

KNOX — A sloppy first half didn't deter the Moniteau football team — or quarterback Kyle Armagost.

After throwing an interception on his first pass attempt and another in the second quarter, Armagost settled down to lead the Warriors to a 27-6 road win over Keystone Friday night.

Moniteau (4-4) also was plagued by 60 yards worth of penalties in the first two quarters.

Keystone (2-6) failed to take advantage of the Moniteau miscues and committed its own by fumbling a snap, then giving up a safety when senior quarterback Mitchell Rearick was taken down by a group of Warriors in the end zone.

Armagost started to settle down some in the second quarter and completed a 19-yard pass to senior tight end Zach Sloan to give Moniteau an 8-0 lead at the half.

Moniteau coach Jeff Campbell said his team came out flat on offense and had the defense to thank for the close halftime score.

The Warriors' lead shrank to two points early in the second half when Rearick completed a 55-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver B.J. Seyler.

From that point on, Moniteau cut back on the penalties and mistakes, and took the game over on offense.

Armagost rushed for two second-half touchdowns and Sloan put the game away with 3:30 to play on a 1-yard touchdown run.

Campbell said he was pleased with how his team played in the second half.

"I showed my emotions at the half because I was disappointed with how these kids were playing," Campbell said. "We played so flat in the first half, they needed something to fire them up, and they didn't disappoint in the second half."

Keystone coach Jason Nellis said his team made too many mistakes and didn't take advantage of the sluggish Moniteau start.

"The kids played hard off the bat," he said. "The offensive struggles just caught up to us, and, besides a few big plays, we struggled and Moniteau took advantage of it."
