Mars school board OKs deal for adult education
ADAMS TWP — Adults will have the opportunity to take lifelong learning classes at Mars High School.
Mars School Board members Tuesday evening voted to approve an agreement with Butler County Community College to provide evening classes ranging from foreign languages and art to exercise classes.
Assistant Superintendent Matthew Friedman said Mars residents make up 25 percent of the classes now held in the Seneca Valley School District. He said the Mars program would begin by holding a few classes from 6 to 9 p.m. one night per week to gauge local interest.
After a brief discussion, board members decided to waive the district's use of facilities fees because they would make the cost of courses too high for residents.
Board President Kimberly Geyer said if the program proves popular, the board could ask municipal leaders in the district if the program could also be held at their facilities.
"I see this more as a service we're able to provide to the community," Geyer said.
Board member Rita Dorsch suggested Mars check with Seneca Valley for tips for the program since that school district has experience with adult classes.
Friedman said BC3 would provide all instructors.
It is not known when the program will begin.
