SHALER TWP — Seneca Valley's offense came to play.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, so did Ryan Mincher.

Shaler's junior quarterback connected on 21 of 35 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns as the Titans celebrated Homecoming with a 41-33 football win Saturday afternoon.

Titan receiver Sean Gavin grabbed nine passes for 129 yards and three scores while Joe Panza caught 10 balls for 157 yards and another touchdown.

"We stopped them a few times today, but their kids made a lot of plays," said SV coach Don Holl. "At times, it felt like one of those games where we would simply have to outscore them."

The loss ends any hope of Seneca Valley (2-5, 0-4) making the WPIAL playoffs.

In the closing seconds, SV quarterback Jordan Brown completed three passes to Forrest Barnes worth 29 yards.

A pass interference penalty on Shaler (4-3, 3-1) was thrown in and the Raiders moved to Shaler's 15, but Aaron Pynos was tackled after a short reception as time ran out.

The Raiders led 20-7 early in the second quarter before Shaler reeled off 28 of the next 34 points to take a 35-26 lead midway through the final period.

Once again, the Raiders managed to make things interesting late in the game.

Running back David Hall scored his third rushing touchdown of the day with 4:18 remaining and Aaron Tanda's extra point cut Shaler's edge to two points.

Tanda's following onside kick did not travel 10 yards and the Titans took over at the Raiders' 49.

Mincher's 15-yard pass to Panza on 2nd-and-16 was followed by Scott Hervoyavich's 10-yard run to pick up a crucial first down as the Raiders began using their timeouts.

With under a minute to play and only one timeout remaining, SV's defense allowed Hervoyavich to score on a second-down play.

The Raiders then blocked Brennan Reynolds' extra point to keep the game a one-score affair.

"We had to let them score there," said Holl. "It was the only way we could give ourselves a chance."

Despite his team's win, Shaler coach Neil Gordon was disappointed in his team's performance.

"I thought we played very, very poorly today," he said. "(SV) had to block that extra point at the end to stay in it and they just ran us over and blocked it.

"We didn't pressure their quarterback, didn't cover their receivers," Gordon added. "I could see this coming. We didn't have a good week of practice."

A key sequence in the game came in the second quarter.

Leading 20-14, the Raiders faced a 4th-and-1 from their own 39 with 3:50 left before halftime.

SV rolled the dice and Barnes, who ended the game with 94 yards on 14 carries, was stuffed for no gain and the Titans took over on downs.

On the next play, Mincher hit Gavin with a 39-yard touchdown pass. Reynolds' point after gave the Titans a 21-20 lead at intermission.

"It's one of those plays that, if it works, great," said Holl of the fourth-down play. "But if it doesn't, people may wonder if it was the right call. But I think the chances we took today were good ones."

Brown finished the game completing 20 of 31 passes for 281 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

The scoring aerial came moments into the game, when the sophomore signal caller teamed with Troy Witt on a 28-yard scoring pass to give SV an early 7-0 lead.

Witt, who would later score on a six-yard run, tallied 115 yards receiving in the game.

The Raiders host North Hills on Friday.
