Ready for some football? Now's your chance.

Alumni Football USA, a national company that promotes, organizes and produces high school alumni football games, is putting together 26 such games in Western Pennsylvania the week of Nov. 24 to 28.

Among the matchups being arranged are Butler vs. Seneca Valley, Mars vs. Knoch, Freeport vs. Apollo-Ridge, Laurel vs. Slippery Rock and New Castle vs. Grove City.

"These games give alumni football players the chance to put on the pads one more time against a rival school," event coordinator Robert Bishop said. "It's amazing how many of these games come together.

"By region, we've done 200 games in the past year."

Last month, alumni games between Sto-Rox and Langley, Charleroi and Monessen, Belle Vernon and Ringgold took place in Western Pennsylvania.

"All of those games attracted large crowds. The Sto-Rox School District made $3,700 off its game," Bishop said.

The games are full-blown tackle football, and are played by high school rules. Quarters are 12 minutes long, no blitzing or crackback blocking is permitted.

The maximum roster size is 50 players. A roster of at least 25 players is required for a team to play.

"We can adjust the length of games based on roster size," Bishop said. "The general ages of players are 19 to 49, though we did have a 59-year-old play in the Monessen-Charleroi game.

"Not all of the games scheduled actually happen. The smaller schools usually get bigger rosters because the communities are tighter and players are more likely to stay in touch with each other," he added. "But I believe the bigger schools north of Pittsburgh will get enough players."

Four Butler graduates, 1989 graduate Joe Mauro, 1994 graduates Greg Stewart and Brad Mauro, and 1998 graduate Todd Nussbaumer, have registered.

Eight 2009 Knoch graduates, Chris Schiebel, Corey Pytel, Jake Schurer, Tim McNerney, Dylan Beck, Bob Yenick, Preston Saxton and Kevin Brodeur, have registered. Tyler Ray (2005), Joe Negley Jr. (1986) and Sean Schroeder (1983) signed up as well.

Mars graduates Jim Godber (1977) and Robert Clatworthy (1988) also have signed up.

There is a $75 fee to play, if signed up before a team meeting that will take place a month before the game. Player fee is $95 for anyone registering after the team meeting.

"Practices are with no pads and we provide the helmets, pads and uniforms for the games," Bishop said. "The team that gets the most players signed up gets the first option to host the game.

"Portions of the gate go to the host school and they keep concession stand revenues. The visiting school district can generate funds through presale tickets."

The uniforms and equipment come from the movie "The Blind Side." Alumni Football USA bought the football equipment used in that film.

"Coaching is usually done by one of the players involved, though former high school coaches often help coordinate the games," Bishop said.
