FREEPORT — Freeport defeated Burrell, 24-6, in a hard-hitting football game between two Class AA Allegheny Conference rivals Friday night at Swartz Field.

The Yellowjackets started the game strong, scoring touchdowns on their first two possessions. Their first score, a 6-yard run by sophomore quarterback Brendan Lynch was made possible by a trick play on the previous down.

Lynch flipped the ball to the halfback, senior Sean Liberto, who faked the run, then pulled up and threw a perfect 26-yard pass to junior Sean Carson.

Their second score was also a quarterback keeper from Lynch, who finished the game with nine rushes for 25 yards and two touchdowns, and threw for 58 yards and one score.

After the two quick scores, the Yellowjackets defense took over, shutting down Burrell's shotgun-based spread offense.

Freeport (3-1, 2-0) didn't allow Burrell quarterback Zach Middleby any time to survey the field and find his receivers and ee was under constant pressure on most snaps.

Burrell finished the first half with only 28 total yards of offense.

"Up front, we got beat up," Burrell coach Tom Henderson said. "That's where games are won."

Running back Jake Campbell led the Freeport ground game with 102 yards on 19 carries, bringing his season total through four games to 318 yards and five touchdowns.

"He's just a workhorse. He just wants the ball all the time," Freeport coach John Gaillot said.

Freeport was penalized often, totaling 95 yards on 11 penalties.

"Those penalties are tough to shake,"Gaillot said. "The kids are playing aggressive and I don't want them to be less aggressive. We've got to be smart sometimes, too. They're going to come back to bite us."
