FOXBURG — Logan Wetzel can gaze out his window and see Foxburg Country Club.

Since the A-C Valley senior was 8, he has spent most of his time on the course or in the clubhouse.

"I would go out and chip and putt with my neighbor," Wetzel said of Orval Corbett, a longtime friend of the Wetzel family. "We played a lot. He taught me the game."

Wetzel helped maintain the Foxburg course as a youth. Now he is tearing it up as a player.

Wetzel has the lowest average for the undefeated Falcons this season.

Shooting in the mid- to upper-30s is the norm. A 40-plus is a bad day.

Playing with precision on the fairways and around the greens, Wetzel has made up for modest distance off the tee.

"I always get outdriven," Wetzel said. "But I make up for it with my short game. That's my strength."

Consistency also has been his strength in a season that has seen many high school golfers in the county and beyond shooting the lowest scores in history.

It's going to make the upcoming postseason a challenge, but one Wetzel embraces.

"A a sophomore, I got to the second day of (the District 9 tournament)," Wetzel said. "Last year, I had a bad day and didn't make it. I really want to get to state."

He might have company from his own team.

Seniors Allan Eaton, Blayne McGuirk and Joe Callender all have had nine-hole rounds of 40 or below.

It has Wetzel and the Falcons thinking about a district and regional team titles, not just individual glory.

"My sophomore year, we were second in the district," Wetzel said. "We lost by three shots. It would be awesome if our top four all got (to the PIAA tournament)."

Wetzel and his teammates certainly are familiar with each other.

Most also are members of the basketball team, and during the summer, the Wetzel house was a popular destination to play golf, hang out, and play golf again.

"We played a lot all summer," Wetzel said. "The guys would come over, we'd play nine holes, go back to my house, cool off, play ping-pong, and go play another nine."

While competition on the golf course is friendly, the ping-pong battles are a bit more intense.

Wetzel is the self-proclaimed king of the table.

Who gives Wetzel his biggest test in ping-pong?

"Probably Joe Callender," Wetzel said. "We just have fun. It's competitive, but we're not at each other's throats or anything (in golf or in ping-pong)."
