JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley football team's performance in the first two games this season has been more than impressive.

In fact, it's been record-breaking.

SV's total of 80 points scored in wins over Norwin (40-24) and Fox Chapel (40-14) is the most any Raiders team has put up in the first two games since the program's inception in 1964.

The previous mark was 69 points, which was achieved by the 1995 and 2001 teams.

Seneca Valley opens Northern Seven Conference play by hosting Erie McDowell (2-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Despite the lofty numbers put up so far, Raiders coach Don Holl knows there is still work to be done.

"We're finding ways to score points," he said. "I am encouraged by the fact that we are finishing drives, but there's always room to improve."

One play that didn't affect the outcome of last week's game was an interception that quarterback Donny Holl threw in the third quarter.

The play came on first down for the Raiders from the Fox Chapel 22 with SV leading 14-7.

Holl's pass sailed to the back of the end zone, where the Foxes' Stephen Covelli picked it off for a touchback.

"Donny put a little too much air under it and it allowed the cornerback to get over and make a play on it," said Coach Holl. "That's a great example of one of the things we can work on."

Though senior halfback Jack Graham is out with a knee injury, other players are picking up the slack in the running game.

Last week, the Raiders' 292 rushing yards were the most since Don Holl took over as head coach.

Donny Holl led the way with 88 yards, but David Hall (76), Troy Witt (62) and Forrest Barnes (55) each contributed big runs as well.

"It's a good problem to have," said Coach Holl of all the players waiting to get their carries. "We can defer to the guy who has the hot hand or go to the guy who's fresh."

McDowell enters Friday's contest after wins over Erie Cathedral Prep (34-7) and Baldwin (44-36).

The Trojans run the flexbone offense, which relies on deception.

In the win over the Highlanders, McDowell senior quarterback Collin Kimball ran for 195 yards and two touchdowns.

"He's been in the system for three years and has a clear understanding of what it is to run the option," said McDowell coach Mark Soboleski.

Running backs Greg Garmon (6-foot-2, 200 pounds) and Jeremy Baronner (6-1, 230) are back after combining for 1,002 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2009.

"Greg runs a 4.4 (second) 40-yard dash, and Jeremy is a bruiser-type fullback, so they both have a different style," said Soboleski.

Soboleski is in his third season as head coach of the Trojans and has tallied a record of 18-7.

McDowell defeated the Raiders last season, 35-20.
