Injuries are part of football, but Mars High coach Scott Heinauer and his staff weren't expecting this much shuffling around so early in the season.

Wingback-linebacker Seth Geyer and linebacker Bill Shrock missed last week's 21-14 season-opening loss at Moon — each with a broken hand.

During the game, wingback-cornerback Josh Pinkerton left with an undisclosed injury.

"We've had to move a lot of guys around," said Heinauer, whose team hosts Pine-Richland at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The veteran coach did leave the door open for Pinkerton to play this week, but if he doesn't, the Planets will be without both of their starting wingbacks.

"In that case, (junior) Ben Bair and (sophomore) Chris Smith will start at wingback," said Heinauer.

Without two of their top three linebackers, the Mars defense struggled against Moon, allowing 254 rushing yards.

Geyer and Shrock are both expected to be available for next Thursday's game at Hampton.

"Right now, we're rotating people at linebacker, but it looks like (Connor) Biggs and (Mike) Marchese will start," the Planets coach said.

Pine-Richland is coming off a 34-22 loss to Mount Lebanon, but Rams coach Clair Altemus saw a lot of positives in the setback.

Senior quarterback Andy Borgen threw for 223 yards and a touchdown.

"I was very impressed with his play," said Altemus. "He brings an element to the position we haven't had here in a while, and that's the ability to scramble. He's cool in the pocket, but if nothing's there, he can run with it."

Wideout Tommy Berexa, a returning starter, caught nine passes for 93 yards and Colin Ryan grabbed six catches for 107 yards and a touchdown.

"Now with Colin in there, we should get single coverage on both of those guys and it will open things up for both of them," said Altemus.

This will be the first meeting between Pine-Richland and Mars since 2005, when the Rams defeated the Planets 27-25.
