DUI, hit-and-run filed against driver

Butler say man admitted guilt

Although a Butler man refused to take a field sobriety test after being involved in a hit-and-run accident early Wednesday, city police say his words spoke louder than his actions when they went to his home to investigate.

Bret W. Kemper, 37, allegedly made an unsolicited confession to police when they arrived at his home shortly after the 12:01 a.m. accident on North Monroe Street.

"I'm stupid! I'm drunk! I wrecked into a car and didn't realize it because I was so drunk. I'm guilty, I guess," Kemper allegedly told police.

Witnesses stated that Kemper's Ford Focus struck a Chevy Cobalt owned by Richard Gregg of Butler while it was parked in front of 144 N. Monroe St., snapping the driver's side mirror from the car.

When Gregg's son approached Kemper's car, which had stopped at the intersection of East Jefferson and Monroe streets, Kemper allegedly fled through the red light.

Police tracked him by the license plate on the car.

According to police, Kemper made his unsolicited confession, then refused to take a field sobriety test before being taken to Butler County Prison for holding.

When asked for a contact number for someone who could pick him up, Kemper responded only with "1-800-DUMB-A**," according to police.

Kemper was charged with DUI highest rate of alcohol, DUI incapable of safe driving, possession of a controlled substance and accidents involving damage to an unattended vehicle.

He has been released from the prison.
