Bertha E. Rodgers
Bertha "Betty" Elizabeth Rodgers, 91, of Plain Grove Township, Lawrence County, died at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Orchard Manor, Grove City, Pine Township, Mercer County, where she received loving care.
Born in Neshannock Falls, Wilmington Township, Lawrence County, Aug. 30, 1918, she was the daughter of Clyde Gilmore Wilson and Mary Viola Johnston Wilson.
She married W. Walter Rodgers on Oct. 30, 1941. He died April 7, 1997.
In addition to being a homemaker, she and her husband were self-employed farmers working side by side until 1997. They were avid gardeners.
She had a strong Christian faith and was a member of the Plain Grove Presbyterian Church, where she was former Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women's Missionary Society. She and her husband were custodians and caretakers for the church for more than 30 years.
She was a current member of the Liberty Grange and was a grange member for more than 77 years. In the grange, she had served on the local, county, state and national levels and was very active in grange activities at the Lawrence County Fair.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially her great-grand children, who referred to her affectionately as GiGi. She loved quilting, camping and reading.
She was a former member of the Slippery Rock AARP.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary B. (Robert) Cover of Fairfield Glades, Tenn., and Grace A. Moyer of Charlottesville, Va.; two sons, Clyde B. (Jan) Rodgers of Cherry Creek, N.Y., and George W. (Nancy) Rodgers of Slippery Rock/Plain Grove; a brother, Robert Wilson of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Agnes Wilson of New Wilmington; 10 grandchildren, Randy and Steven Cover, Scottie Ann Frey, Kenneth, Michael and Robert Rodgers, Linda McBride, Carrie Miller, Christopher Rodgers and Elizabeth McCullough; 11 great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Arthur and Russell Wilson.
<B>RODGERS</B> — Visitation for Bertha "Betty" Elizabeth Rodgers, who died Tuesday, July 20, 2010, will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock. Services will follow at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Stanley Keehlwetter, interim pastor of the Plain Grove Presbyterian Church, officiating.
