Concert will benefit clinic
BUTLER TWP — Nationally recognized musicians will perform a concert Sept. 25 to benefit the Community Health Clinic of Butler County.
This is the second year for the Music for Medicine concert, which will feature a combination of classical and jazz music at Butler County Community College's Succop Theater.
Butler native William Purvis, an internationally acclaimed French hornist, and his wife, pianist Mihae Lee, had the idea of organizing a benefit concert for the health clinic, where Purvis' mother, Jean, is secretary on the board of directors.
"I think it's wonderful. They knew how much it meant to the clinic, and they approached me about organizing it," Jean Purvis said.
Purvis said she is not one to make predictions, but she hopes this year's concert can be as successful as last year's event, which raised an unexpected $39,000.
Purvis and Lee will be joined by recent Yale School of Music graduates violinist Katie Hyun and cellist Mihai Marica. The quartet will play classical chamber music.
"The Succop Theater is ideal for chamber music," Jean Purvis said.
Butler natives Jim Pugh and Jim Cunningham, former classmates of William Purvis at Butler High School, will headline the jazz portion of the performance.
Pugh, a trombonist, has garnered national acclaim throughout his career. His music can be heard in collaboration with musical artists Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson and Madonna, among many others.
Lee said when she approached Pugh about performing, he said he would "do anything for Butler."
Cunningham has played the trumpet in numerous bands, ensembles and orchestras.
Pugh and Cunningham will be joined by the Western Pennsylvania Trinity Jazz Orchestra.
The health clinic, which opened in 2008, provides free medical and dental care for county residents who are uninsured and whose income is just high enough that they do not qualify for government health care.
