WASHINGTON — Thousands of drop-side cribs from popular retailer Pottery Barn Kids are being recalled over safety concerns.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the 82,000 cribs on recall could pose a suffocation or entrapment risk to young children if the drop-side rail on the crib detaches because of faulty hardware.

The recall involves all Pottery Barn Kids drop-side cribs regardless of model number.

CPSC said there have been 36 reports of drop-side rails that have malfunctioned or detached. Seven children sustained minor injuries when they fell out of the cribs or got their legs caught between the mattress and side rail.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Kellogg said Wednesday higher-than-normal amounts of certain chemicals in its package liners caused the unusual smell and flavor that prompted a recall of 28 million boxes of its cereal in late June.The food maker recalled Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Froot Loops and Honey Smacks after about 20 people complained, including five who reported nausea and vomiting.Consumers reported the cereal smelled or tasted waxy, and others said the taste or smell was similar to that of metal or soap. Others simply described it as stale.The company, based in Battle Creek, Mich., said it identified elevated levels of chemicals called hydrocarbons as the source. Those chemicals include methyl naphthalene.

TOKYO — Panasonic's Sanyo Electric signed a $366 million deal to sell its chip unit to ON Semiconductor, allowing the U.S. manufacturer to expand its business in the Japanese market, the companies said today.Under the agreement, ON acquires Sanyo's chip subsidiary Sanyo Semiconductor Co. and assets related to its semiconductor business in a cash and stock transaction.
