Chillicothe paints the town

Visitors tally 17 hits in Butler

Chillicothe's bats didn't remain silent for long.

The Prospect League's Eastern Division leader was held scoreless through three innings Sunday night against the Butler BlueSox at Pullman Park.

The Paints then erupted for nine runs over the next five innings to pin a 9-6 loss on the hosts.

Chillicothe (Ohio) had 17 hits in the game.

Butler (9-12), which was coming off a 1-0 home win over West Virginia Saturday night, led the Paints 5-4 after six innings.

But Chillicothe (17-5) feasted on Butler's bullpen.

Danny Fawcett, who relieved Butler starter Kurt Roeder in the fifth innning, began the seventh by giving up consecutive singles to the Paints' Brandon White and Jeff Holm.

Following a sacrifice bunt by Greg Van Horn, Fawcett was relieved by Max Vogel, who allowed an RBI single to Adam Gecewich before throwing a wild pitch that allowed Holm to score to give the Paints the lead for good.

Butler entered its last at-bat down 9-5.

The BlueSox's Cameron Squires was called on to pinch-hit and he reached on an error with one out. He ended up scoring on Zach Duggan's base hit, but Kevan Smith struck out with the tying run on deck.

Injuries have depleated the Butler bullpen. Vogel and Colby Roberts, who pitched the ninth inning, are both listed as outfielders.

But BlueSox manager Jason Wuerfel said it was still a winnable game.

"A lot of it comes down to what happens before a pitch is thrown," he said. "We have to improve on our mound presence, our confidence and getting ourselves into attack mode.

"We can't let situations dictate how we play the game."

J.J. DuBoise entered the game after Vogel. In all, Butler's four relief pitchers surrendered six runs on 10 hits in five innings.

In contrast, Chillicothe's relievers settled things down for the Paints.

After starter Anthony Wieber gave up four earned runs on eight hits in four innings, F.J. Lucchetti, Kyle Schepel and Kyle Lindquist teamed up to allow two runs on three hits over the final five frames.

Lucchetti earned the win after working the fifth and sixth innings. He was charged with one run on one hit while striking out two and walking one.

"We needed that tonight from our bullpen," said Paints manager Brian Mannino. "(Wieber) is a spot starter for us. Once we got the lead in the seventh, we felt good about our chances with who we had in the bullpen."

Butler (9-12) trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth. But a two-run double by Jon Craycraft and a run-scoring base hit from Logan Uxa lifted the BlueSox to a 4-3 lead.

A sacrifice fly by Tyler Sciacca in the next inning pushed Butler's lead to 5-3.

n In Saturday's 1-0 win over West Virginia, Reed Tomlinson shut out the Miners on five hits through seven innings before Ryan Thompson and Cam Armstrud closed the deal on the mound.

Tomlinson earned the win, striking out two and walking two. Armstrud earned the save after pitching a scoreless ninth.

The game's only run came in the bottom of the thirdm when Kevan Smith drove in Zach Duggan.
