J. Richard 'Dick' Mauk
J. Richard "Dick" Mauk, 65, of New Castle passed away the afternoon of May 22 at his home after battling a long illness.
Dick was born Oct. 25, 1944, in Punxsutawney, to James and Gladys Himes Mauk, who survives. He was raised along side his sister, Janice, who now, along with her husband, Chris Janosik, live in Westchester, Pa.
Dick began his education at Reynoldsville High School. He then furthered his studies with undergraduate work at Stevens Point in Wisconsin and finishing with a master's degree of social work from the University of Pittsburgh, where he participated in the Kellogg Leadership Program.
Mr. Mauk lived in the Butler area after his graduation, before returning to New Castle.
Dick is survived by his wife, the former Sara Louise "Sally" Rice, who he married Aug. 17, 1974, in New Castle.
He held many different positions over his career. He was a medical social worker for Heartland Hospice. He was the president of the Castle Management Corp. He also held positions at the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Welfare and as a professor at Westminster College.
In Butler, he was the director of Children and Youth Services and a teacher at the Center Avenue Elementary School. He also held positions at Slippery Rock University and Stevens Point as dorm manager.
Mr. Mauk was an avid hunter, fisherman and long-standing member of the Pennsylvania Club. Dick also held positions on the board of New Visions for New Castle, the Fraternal Order of Masons, the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, where he served on the beautification committee, the board of the New Castle Parking Authority, the New Castle Airport Authority, the New Castle Downtown Business Association, the Mental Health Board and the New Castle Bicentennial Committee.
In addition to his parents, sister and wife, Mr. Mauk is survived by one son and one daughter, Russell and Sherry Mauk of Roanoke, Va., and Alison and Mike Moze of Cranberry Township; two stepdaughters, Susan and Stuart Kessler of Hillsborough, N.J., and Marcie and Mark Reinhard of Raleigh, N.C.; and one stepson, Douglas Seeger of New Castle. He also is survived by 10 grandchildren, Jake, Sam and Layla Mauk, Brady Moze, Aaron and Justin Kessler, Ashley Miller, Douglas Seeger, Christopher and Morgan Reinhard; one niece, Emily Janosik; and his constant companion, Lady, his cocker spaniel.
The family wishes to thank all of the friends who were at their sides during Dick's illness, with particular recognition to Donna, Lou, Clara, BJ, Stan, Joe and Tim.
<B>MAUK</B> — Visitation for J. Richard "Dick" Mauk, who died Saturday, May 22, 2010, will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the <B>R.
