Pitching committee sparks BlueSox
SLIPPERY ROCK — Considering his starting pitcher did not throw a pitch, Butler BlueSox manager Jason Wuerfel was pleased with the way things turned out Tuesday afternoon.
Moments before he was going to face Slippery Rock's lineup at Critchfield Park, Butler right-hander Kenny Bechaud was scratched from the lineup.
"I turned the lineup card in with his (Bechaud's) name on it," said Wuerfel. "But when I got back to the dugout, I was told that Kenny's arm was bothering him and he couldn't go."
Wuerfel ended up sending four pitchers to the mound, starting with Seneca Valley graduate Derek Peluso. The quartet gave up just one run on seven hits as the BlueSox began a five-game road trip with a 7-1 victory over the Sliders.
Peluso worked the first two innings, holding the Sliders (4-7) scoreless with just two baserunners.
Wuerfel then called on right-hander Corey Young, who held Slippery Rock to just one run on three hits over the next four innings. He earned the win after striking out two and walking one.
"Derek hasn't been feeling that great either, but he gutted out two innings for us," said Wuerfel. "And Corey came in and did a nice job. He gave us four solid innings."
Ryan Thompson worked a scoreless seventh and eighth and Cole Taylor struck out the side after surrendering hits to Brady Stewart and Zach Hofer to begin the ninth.
Butler's four hurlers combined to strike out 10 and walk three.
"Our bullpen was stretched pretty thin as it is," added Wuerfel. "I've got to tip my hat to our guys who threw today. We needed it."
The BlueSox (6-5) managed two big innings offensively.
In the top of the third inning, base hits from Ryan Geibel and Colby Roberts and a walk issued by Sliders' starter Matt Cockburn to Austin Wulf loaded the bases.
Geibel scored on John Sulzicki's base hit and Adam Jury's single plated Wulf and Roberts for a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth, Tyler Sciacca cleared the bases with a double and later scored on Max Vogel's sacrifice fly.
In all, Butler tallied 14 hits and featured five players with multi-hits, led by Roberts' three singles.
"We waited for good pitches and when we got them, our guys put them in play," said Wuerfel. "We had good at-bats today and I was pleased with that."
On the other side of the field, there weren't many positives Slippery Rock manager Andy Chalot could take from the defeat.
A fielding error, several misplayed flyballs in the outfield and nine runners left on base (including five in scoring position) made for a frustrating afternoon.
"What I'm most disappointed in is that we didn't play with much energy today," said Chalot. "We have an off-day (Wednesday) and I think it's coming at the right time."
Cockburn shouldered the loss after throwing 4+ innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked two.
Sean Mahley (1 inning), Lucas Anderson (3) and Sam Trecaso (1) combined to pitch the final five innings for the Sliders.
Slippery Rock plated its lone run in the bottom of the fifth when Kyle Mossbarger singled, moved to second on a throwing error and scored on Derek Carr's base hit.
