Numbers not quite adding up

Let's try and run this down as easy as we can.

The Big Ten, which had 11 teams, now has 12 with the addition of Nebraska. The Big 12, in turn, now has 10 teams, but by the sounds of it, will eventually be reduced down to two or three teams by the end of the summer.

Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State seem poised to joing the PAC-10 as did Colorado last week.

Perhaps the Big 10 can steal the Big 12 Conference name, unless of course they bring as many as four more teams in to the mix.

Boise State will be making the jump to the Mountain West, which doesn't make huge waves except Boise State has gotten a lot of disrespect when it comes to the college football Bowl Championship Series recently.

So, if you've followed all this, you're a lot smarter than I am, and we haven't begun the Summer of Migration where the college landscape will be like nothing we've ever seen.

This all started over the winter when the Big Ten was looking to expand and teams from the Big East like Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Rutgers were being mentioned.

Even the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference may be all thrown about when all is said and done. And what about the biggest chip in all of this, Notre Dame?

Still an independent in football, but in the Big East in all other sports, it would make the most sense for Notre Dame to be thrown into the Big Ten/11/12.

Obviously — and sadly — this all boils down to money. College presidents have to ask themselves, "How much do we have now? And, more importantly, how much more can we make if we defect to another conference?"

And while everyone is thinking about football, what about basketball? Powerhouse Kansas may be one of the Big 12 teams left out in the cold, but who wouldn't want to add a team like that?

Geographically, everything is going to be a mess so perhaps the Big East should make a push for the Jayhawks' programs.

Should the Big East lose any teams, including Pittsburgh — which may be linked to the ACC, where Miami, Boston College and Virginia Tech all defected — maybe that could revitalize the conference.

The idea of these superconferences, which could have as many as 16 teams, is a bit ludicrous. Try playing everyone in football once. Basketball, yes, but how many teams will you take in the NCAA tournament?

And don't forget about the school's other sports. Can you see some school's women's tennis team traveling 1,200 miles for a conference match?

It's just time to start from scratch. Just form several regional conferences (Conferences East, Midwest, South, Southwestern, Far West, Pacific Northwest and so on) and go from there.

Conventionality is gone, but we still need some rational thinking. Remember when the Atlanta Braves used to play in the National League West?

That's not a problem anymore. And you didn't need a college institution to teach you that.
