Betty Marie Shiring

Betty Marie Young Shiring, 86, of Serenity of Commerce, 2511 Wixom Road, Commerce Township, Mich., passed away Tuesday at her home. She formerly lived on New Castle Street, Slippery Rock, and later lived at Home 2 Me in Slippery Rock.

Born in Oil City, Venango County, June 19, 1923, she was the daughter of Francis D. and Annetta Contrael Young.

She married Mark A. Shiring on May 27, 1946, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 2003.

She was a 1941 graduate of Kittanning High School, a homemaker, a member of the St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Slippery Rock, and a member of the Women's Club of Slippery Rock.

She loved spending time with her family, playing bridge and traveling. She often spoke of her trip in 2004 with her daughter, Barbara, to visit Mackinac Island, where they stayed at The Grand Hotel where the movie "Somewhere in Time" was filmed.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara S. (Charles) Bennett of Commerce, Mich.; a son, Mark Allen (Debra) Shiring of Stafford, Va.; two sisters, Mary Catherine Livengood of Murrysville and Carolyn Dragan of Manorville; a brother, Robert (Babs) Young of Leechburg; and two grandchildren, Kristyn and Adam Shiring.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Young, and a sister, Annetta "Netcha" Pierce.

<B>SHIRING</B> — Friends of Betty Marie Young Shiring, who died Tuesday, May 11, 2010, will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 670 S. Main St., Slippery Rock, with the Rev. Kevin Poecking presiding. Interment will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Estates, Worthington.
