Ohio golfer bags 2 holes-in-one, new car

PINE TWP — The 18th annual Tony Dorsett Celebrity Golf Classic June 7 at Treesdale Golf and Country Club was the site of one of the rarest feats in golf: two holes-in-one in a single round.

Alonzo Shavers, president of Infinite Sports, a sports and entertainment management firm in Columbus, Ohio, and a former wideout at Ohio State University, sank the two aces.

"It's pretty remarkable. It's obviously never happened since we opened in 1994," said Jack Kimbell, general manager at Treesdale. "And to get two holes-in-one during a contest, those odds must be unbelievable."

According to a Golf Digest study conducted in 2000, the odds of hitting two holes-in-one during the same round is 1 in 67 million.

Adding to his great golfing luck, both of those holes were prize holes during the charity event.

On the first hole-in-one, Shavers won a 2010 Buick LaCrosse that was provided by North Star Buick Pontiac GMC in Jackson Township.

The dealership's general manager, Ron Casella, presented Shavers with the car.

Josh Philips, a sales associate at North Star, said everyone at the course was excited for Shavers and his accomplishments.

"The were a lot of NFL players going up to (Shavers) and wanting to shake his hand when it's usually the other way around," he said.

For his second hole-in-one, also a prize hole, Shavers received four trips to golfing resorts, including one in Maui, Hawaii.

Shavers was playing with his Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort sponsored scramble team that included retired Pro Bowl and Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Levon Kirkland and Anthony Mason.

The first hole-in-one occurred on Hole 2. Shavers explained his two partners took shots that didn't hit the green on the 175-yard, par 3 hole.

He got out his 7-iron for the downhill hole.

"I hit it clean. It landed about 2 inches from the cup, back spun and went in," said Shavers, who acknowledged he didn't see his ball, but Kirkland who told him the ball went into the hole.

"I was excited, but kind of in disbelief. Did that just happen?" said Shavers.

His son Alonzo "Chico" Shavers III, immediately texted his mother Tracy to inform her of the feat and that his dad had just won a car.

"My wife has already confiscated the car," Shavers said with a smile.

Shavers, who recently turned 40, described himself as "not a star" golfer with about a 10 handicap.

When things settled down a bit, the group went onto the next hole and ended up bogeying it.

"I told (Kirkland and Mason) after that we have a good chance for a decent score and we birdied the next two holes," said Shavers.

Then the group got the sixth hole, where Shavers said it was almost a repeat of his hole-in-one. He lined up the shot to get it as close to the hole as possible.

On this par-3 hole, he used a gap wedge for the 135- to 140-yard distance. The ball hit 2 inches to the left of the pin and spun into the hole.

Shavers saw this ball all the way into the hole. However, no one other than his scramble partners saw the ace in the hole, so they called to get confirmation.

The rare feat of hitting two holes-in-one in a single round didn't hit Shavers until several days later, when he friends, golf and business associates contacted him with congratulations.

"A lot of golfers go their whole lives and never accomplish the feat (of a hole-in-one), let alone two in one round. It was only by the grace of God," said Shavers.

The event was expected to raise more than $350,000 to benefit the physically and developmentally challenged at the McGuire Memorial home in New Brighton.
