Cubs to hold memorial boxing event

An amateur boxing card honoring the memory of Candice Berner will take place June 19 at the Butler Cubs Hall.

Berner, a Grove City High and Slippery Rock University graduate, was a female boxer who worked out at the Cubs Hall for a few months before going to Alaska last August.

She was killed in a rare wolf attack in Alaska in March.

"Her parents are starting a scholarship fund in Candice's honor and this card will be dedicated to her memory," said longtime Cubs boxing trainer Don Spinetti. "Hopefully, we'll get some donations toward that scholarship at the show."

The fights begin at 7:30 p.m. and 10 bouts will be on the card. Admission is $12.

Along with his own fighters, Spinetti is drawing boxers from gyms in Morgantown (W.Va.), Tarentum, McKeesport, Pittsburgh and New Castle. He has one fighter each coming from Cleveland and Erie as well.

Cubs boxers on the card include Donovan Malovich, 11; Billy Wolfe, 10; Dalton Covert, 17; Dan Abbott, 16; and 23-year-old Jimmy Cress.

Malovich is 12-2 and recently won the Pittsburgh Gold Gloves title in his 70-pound junior division.

Wolfe is 4-1 as an amateur.

Covert, a nephew of former Cubs amateur standout Ryan Covert, and Abbott will be making their boxing debuts.

"Ryan's been training Dalton and we have high hopes for him because he's a tough kid," Spinetti said. "Abbott's been doing some sparring and looks very good, too.

"You never know how someone's gonna do in front of a crowd for the first time," he added. "That's the biggest unknown in terms of an amateur card like this."

Malovich and Wolfe will fight three one-minute rounds. Other amateur bouts on the card will be three two-minute rounds with the Cress fight being three three-minute rounds.

Cress is 14-6 as an amateur.

"Jimmy has a lot of ability, but the big thing is keeping him in the gym," Spinetti said. "We could turn him pro. He has the talent."

Tickets are available by calling 724-283-9888.
