Young drivers flex their muscles
BUFFALO TWP — Winning is sweet enough.
Depending on whom you've beaten, it can become even sweeter.
Carl Bowser and Gregg Satterlee enjoyed two of the most satisfying victories of their young careers Friday night at Lernerville Speedway.
Bowser, 23, a Freeport graduate and Sarver resident, claimed his third career Lernerville Sprint feature win, outdueling Rod George during the middle laps and holding off Danny Holtgraver at the end.
Satterlee, 24, of Rochester Mills grabbed the lead from pole-sitter Johnny Garvin Jr. of Sarver on the 10th lap and held off All-Star Late Model standout Chub Frank in the Late Model feature.
Bowser started in the second row, behind Bob Felmlee and alongside his good friend and nemesis, George.
"Every time I'm running behind Bob and Rod, I learn from them," Bowser said. "They're veteran guys who know all the moves."
George took a win from Bowser two weeks ago at the Sarver oval, sliding in front of him on the fourth turn of the final lap.
The pair were dueling again midway through Friday's feature.
"I wasn't taking anything for granted this time," Bowser declared. "Every time Rod slid in front of me on a turn, I returned the favor on the next turn. I kept coming right back at him."
The two exchanged the lead on nearly every turn for about three laps.
"Then Rod gave it a little too much on Turn 4 and caught the wall. He wasn't the same after that," Bowser said. "To finally finish ahead of that guy — I can't put into words what this win means to me."
Bowser never knew where Holtgraver was until he crossed the finish line. Holtgraver started from the eighth spot and fell just short of his first Lernerville feature win.
"This car was incredible tonight," Holtgraver said. "I could race it anywhere. We lost this race because I'm an idiot.
"I kept driving the car off the track. I thought I was gonna go airborne a couple of times. I just kept driving too hard into Turn 2. The car was unbelievable. The driver screwed up."
Satterlee started from the fourth spot in the Late Model feature and kept Frank in second place for the final eight laps.
Frank owns 13 career wins at Lernerville, including two this season, despite coming to town primarily for All-Star races and World of Outlaw events. He was supposed to be in Bedford for an Outlaws race Friday.
"That show got rained out, so we circled back here," Frank said. "We pretty much toured the state of Pennsylvania to get here."
Satterlee won his eighth career Lernerville feature.
"It does mean a whole lot more beating (Frank)," Satterlee said. "Chub's won Outlaw races. ... He's one of the best."
Satterlee stayed up high and repeatedly shot past Frank off Turn 2 on restarts. The Late Model race had nine cautions.
"I needed about 10 straight laps of green flag racing and it never happened," Frank said. "But (Satterlee) was good. He was real good."
In other features:
• Defending points champion Jeremiah Shingledecker started fifth, took the lead from Del Rougeux Jr. on the seventh lap and rolled to his first Modified feature win of the season at Lernerville.
The victory was Shingledecker's fourth overall in 2010 and his ninth career Lernerville triumph.
• Bob Egley of Pittsburgh grabbed the lead from Portersville's Ryan Moyer on the 15th lap and denied the No. 13x car its first Sportsman Stock win at the Sarver oval.
Egley's win was his second here this season and the 10th of his career.
Moyer finished second.
Notes: There were 78 cars in the pits, but only 14 Modifieds. ... Ralph Quarterson, Lernerville Sprint points champion in 1968 and 1969, is being inducted into the DIRT Northeast Hall of Fame Sunday. He owns more than 600 career feature wins in the Sprint and Modified divisions combined. ... Lernerville hosts the All-Star Sprints next Friday.
