Here are scheduled activities associated with Memorial Day that were sent in to the Butler Eagle.

Dedication of the Merchant mariners monument in Diamond Park at 11:30 a.m. Friday.A roll call ceremony will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at VA Butler Healthcare.A brief ceremony Monday at VA Butler Healthcare will start at 9 a.m., followed at 10:40 a.m. with a Memorial Day parade on Main Street. A closing ceremony will start immediately after the parade at North Cemetery.

The borough is conducting a Memorial Day Festival starting with a concert by Dave's Country Keyboard at the Chicora Moose Lodge at 9:30 p.m. Friday, and running through Monday morning.Saturday has a vehicle extrication demonstration and tour of a medical helicopter at 10 a.m., followed at 1 p.m. by a "Battle of the Barrel" in front of the fire station and festival games at the fire hall.At 6:30 p.m. there will be a ladder truck demonstration behind the fire department, and a concert by the Wrangler Bank at 8 p.m. at the fire hall.The day will end with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.On Sunday, the day will start at noon with a car cruise, followed at 2 p.m. by a country concert at the fire hall.On Monday, the fire department ladies auxiliary will hold a bake sale at the old fire house at 9 a.m., followed at 10 a.m. by the Memorial Day parade on Main Street.A new veterans honor roll will be dedicated following the parade, with guest speaker Lt. Gen. John Stattler, USMC retired, whose last office was Director for Strategic Plans and Policy for the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. He also is the United States' representative to the Military Staff Committee of the United Nations.The Chicora Moose Lodge will participate in the Chicora Festival from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday by selling fruit cuts, snow cones and pie to benefit Moose charities.

The township will have a flag-raising ceremony in honor of township veterans at 1 p.m. Saturday at the township municipal building, 102 Township Drive.Abie Abraham, Stan McCollough and Lester Domhoff, three well-known veterans, will conduct the ceremony. The Syria Legion of Honor will provide music.The township recently received donations of all the materials required for the new flagpole with a light and flower bed. The donations were made by township residents or businesses.Township employees donated their time to erect the pole.

The township's Memorial Day ceremony presented by the Cranberry Township Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 879 will start at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Veteran's Memorial in the North Boundary Park.The guest speaker will be Col. Steven Painter, Vice Wing Commander of the 171st Air Refueling Wing, Air National Guard, at the Pittsburgh International Airport.The ceremony will include the township VFW 879 color guard; the Ohio Valley Marine Corps League Detachment 882 color guard and rifle salute; Ally Wunsche, Seneca Valley High School Student, who will sing the national anthem; presentation of six memorial wreaths by veterans accompanied by the Seneca Valley High School student trumpet players Natalie Hritz and Pat Fort, who will also play "Taps;" and remembrance of POW-MIAs with the release of white doves by the National Aviary.Those attending should bring a chair for the 45-minute ceremony. In case of rain, the event will be in the barn adjacent to the Veteran's Memorial.

The Evans City Bishop-Sharrar American Legion Post 219 will hold a Memorial Day Service at 2 p.m. Sunday at Evans City Cemetery. In case of rain, the service will be in the Evans City Elementary School cafeteria.The guest speaker is Command Sergeant Major Paul Massullo, instructor of Junior ROTC at Seneca Valley High School. Also participating will be Roscoe Mulvey, who recently received the Legion of Honor medal from France.

Freeport's annual Memorial Day Observance will be hosted Monday by the VFW Post 6648.The parade will start at 9:30 a.m. from Freeport Junior High School, and will travel along Buffalo Street, Fifth Street, Market Street and Second Street to Riverside Drive.A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. in front of the Freeport Tower.Participants will include the VFW Post 6648, the Freeport Fire Department and EMS, the Freeport High School band and choir, members of the 78th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and other groups.This year's guest speaker is Freeport native Thomas Sweeny, Jr., U.S. Navy veteran.In case of rain, services will be in the Freeport Junior High School auditorium.HarrisvilleThe American Legion Post 852 is sponsoring the Memorial Day parade at 1 p.m. Monday.Following the parade, a memorial service will be at the community park to honor veterans. The American Legion 8th grade student award winners who will participate are Noah Hastings and Jessica Staudacher.

The Roy Calvin McGinnis VFW Post 7073 and the Charles A. Black American Legion Post 598 will conduct services at various cemeteries. The group will gather at 8 a.m.Monday at the VFW/American Legion Post and ending with a program in front of Parker Personal Care Home at the veterans memorial at 12:15 p.m. The A-C Valley High School band will perform.

The Penn Township Veterans Association will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the "Wings of Peace" monument at the corner of Airport Road and Three Degree Road. In case of rain, the service will be in the township volunteer fire department's building on Airport Road.There will be a flyover by three non-military aircraft in "missing man" formation.Mike Kelly, Republican nominee for the 3rd Congressional District seat, will be the keynote speaker.

The Shearer-Shick American Legion Post 454, along with VFW Post 7132 host a memorial service Sunday and commemorative services on Monday.On Sunday, a memorial service will be at the Veteran's park at 3 p.m. In case of rain, it will be in the Rimersburg United Methodist Church.On Monday, the annual parade starts at 9 a.m. at Rimersburg Elementary School and culminates at the cemetery.Guest speaker will be Rachel Kindel, a teacher at the elementary school. In case of rain, the program will be at Union High School.Veterans with physical impairments may get transportation help by calling Commander Terry Custer of the legion at 814-473-8364.

The Sower's Chapel at 100 Iron Bridge Road will have an outdoor Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. Sunday. It will include patriotic music, an honor guard and the folding of the American flag.Any veteran is invited to attend. Veterans or their families will be given a special recognition at the service.For information, call 724-353-2220.

A parade will start at 10:30 a.m. Monday and march along Main Street to Roebling Park and to Rebecca Street. The parade lineup will start at 10 a.m. at the borough building. A service will follow at Roebling Park.

Memorial Day will be observed in the Slippery Rock borough and the township at 10 a.m. Monday at the Slippery Rock Cemetery.Events include a talk by Stephen Hambley, a county commissioner from Medina, Ohio; readings by 8th grade outstanding students Aster Chimeleski and Sean Smith; patriotic music by the Slippery Rock High School Band; and prayers led by Father Kevin Poecking of St. Peters Parish.Members of the Frank P. Cheeseman American Legion, Post 393 will provide military honors.In the event of rain, all ceremonies will be moved to the Slippery Rock Community Park Recreation Center.

The Zelienople American Legion Post 474 will conduct several services on Monday.At 9 a.m., a ceremony will be at the Zelienople Cemetery.At 9:30 a.m., a ceremony will be at the Harmony Borough Square, followed by a ceremony at the Harmony Cemetery and at the Route 19 Bridge.At 11 a.m., the main ceremony will take place at the Memorial Park at the intersection of Main Street and Grandview Avenue in ZelienopleA fly over will be done by the pilots from Condor Aero Club and the Zelienople Airport.The speaker will be Zelienople Mayor Tom Oliverio.The ceremony will include the Seneca Valley Marching Band, the American Legion Members, auxiliary members, Sons of the Legion Members and Junior Members.The audience should provide their own chairs.
