WSeveral WPIAL track and field squads will take part in the first round of the team playoffs beginning at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The Butler boys and girls will host their respective Class AAA playoff events. The Butler boys will face Knoch, Central Catholic and Greensburg Salem while the Tornado girls will face Knoch, Derry and Oakland Catholic.

Also in Class AAA, the Seneca Valley boys will travel to West Mifflin, where they will square off against Moon, Mount Lebanon and the Titans.

In Class AA, the Freeport boys and girls teams will serve as hosts. The Yellowjackets boys face Beaver Falls, Burrell and New Brighton while the girls team will Center, Charleroi and Mount Pleasant.

Mars will a host boys and girls Class AA events. The Mohawk, South Park, Washington and Waynesburg will compete in the boys meet, while Mohawk, Riverview, South Park and Waynesburg in the girls meet.

The winners of all four first-round meets in each division will meet in the WPIAL Championships at 2 p.m. May 13 at West Mifflin.

PENN TWP — Jody Barrett and Billy Burke of Cranberry Highlands Golf Course fired a 63 to place first at the Bridgestone Golf Pro-Scratch Amateur event Monday at Butler Country Club.The duo won by four strokes over Rob McClellan and Geoff Patterson of Butler Country Club and Tom Bummer and Perry Graciano of Churchill Valley Country Club.McClellan captured the low professional event with a 68, two strokes better than Kevin Shields of Sewickley Heights Golf Club. Burke tied with Larry Lis Jr. of Williams Country Club to win the low amateur event.McClellan also won the professional skins competition on Hole No. 2.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Four Slippery Rock University softball players earned all-PSAC West honors Monday.Senior first baseman Sheree Horvath, catcher Jessica Kortz and Butler graduate and SRU freshman outfielder Jenna Geibel were named to the first team. Junior outfielder Shardea Croes was named to the second team.Horvath batted .342 with four homers and 13 doubles. Kortz hit .373 with 12 homers and Geibel hit .385 with 11 homers and 37 RBI. Croes hit .407 with 55 hits and 16 stolen bases.The Rock finished 22-21, 5-11 in the PSAC West.

SALISBURY, Md. — Slippery Rock wrestler Forrest Christmann placed fifth in the 189-pound division at the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association Eastern Championships over the weekend.Christmann pinned Rory Bonner of Thorofare, N.J. in the consolation final match to be named all-American.

KUTZTOWN — Mars High graduate Monica Glomb, a junior pitcher on the Kutztown University softball team, was named to the All-PSAC East first team.Glomb is 15-5 with a 2.59 ERA with nine complete games, four shutouts and 91 strikeouts.Kutztown will play in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament, which will begin May 13.

WEST SUNBURY — Don McCoy of Butler, Anthony Dorenkamp of Chicora and Gary Wulff of West Sunbury all won their respective divisions in off-road racing Saturday at Rolling W Ranch.McCoy won the Rally 6-cylinder division, Dorenkamp won the Rally 4-cylinder and Wulff won the Limited Super Buggy.Other winners were Tom Hood of New Jersey in the Super Buggy and William McClain in the Words Buggy division.About 30 cars competed. The next race at the facility is May 22.
