Students win journalism awards from Edinboro U.

EDINBORO — Several student journalists from Butler and Freeport high schools were the recipients of awards given by Edinboro University's Communication and Media Studies Department.

The high school media were judged in the fourth annual Northwestern Pennsylvania High School Journalism Competition. The contest recognizes journalistic writing and reporting among regional high school juniors and seniors.

Winners were recognized during a luncheon held as part of Edinboro's recent High School Journalism Day, attended by more than 155 high school students and 19 teachers.

Local winners include:

• Christian Heilman of Freeport High School received a $1,000 scholarship to Edinboro University for "Best-in-Show" entries.

• Robert Punchur of Butler High School and Heilman, print news

• Punchur, print features

• Hanna Hockenberry and Katy Albert, both of Butler High, print opinion

• Elizabeth Manuel and Colin Wiles, both of Butler High, broadcast news

• Heilman, news anchor
