HARRISBURG — A man from Mars was reappointed to a state commission.
Gov. Ed Rendell announced Monday that Christopher A. Protho was reappointed to the Professional Standards and Practices Commission.
The commission works to improve the quality of education in Pennsylvania by working with teachers.
The commission promotes and enforces Pennsylvania's Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators through its educational outreach programs, its advocacy with the Department of Education and with the state Board of Education, and its oversight and enforcement of the professional educator discipline system.
BUTLER TWP — The March of Dimes will sponsor the 3-mile Butler March for Babies at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Butler County Community College Campus.Registration for the fundraiser, which benefits babies born healthy as well as those needing extra care, begins at 9 a.m. at Founders Hall on the BC3 campus.Other events Saturday will include a light breakfast before the walk, children's crafts and activities provided by Kindercare Seven Fields, and lunch after the walk.For information, visit www.marchforbabies.org
SLIPPERY ROCK — The American Cancer Society's ninth annual Relay for Life, held at Slippery Rock University's Morrow Field House Saturday and Sunday, raised $33,000.Five-hundred participants and 85 teams made up the largest relay in nine years and surpassed the $30,000 goal.Ten cancer survivors and their caregivers started off the relay by taking a Survivor Victory Lap. The "Jail & Bail" fundraiser, run by the Park Ranger Society & Hunting and Fishing Club, raised $1,000.The Luminaria Ceremony also was held to remember those who died of cancer and honor those who have battled or are still battling the disease. More than 500 luminaria bags were lit.
