Chapter and Verse

Attendees at the Butler Rotary Club's Luncheon for Literacy enjoy lunch while seated at 21 different themed tables, each decorated to represent a book. The event, which was held Sunday afternoon at Founders Hall on the campus of Butler County Community College, raised money for BC3's Adult Literacy Program.

Attendees at the Butler Rotary Club's Luncheon for Literacy on Sunday were treated to a spread of delectable tables, each decorated around the theme of a book.

For a table on "Robin Hood," metal plates and hammered copper serving bowls topped a burlap tablecloth. Rotarian Stephen Harding of Center Township, who decorated that table, included the dishes and some flatware even though they compromised authenticity.

"(Characters in the book) ate with their hands," said Harding, whose table favors included "possibles bags" filled with trinkets and treasures.

Nearby, a "Marley and Me" table was decorated with paw prints, and bone-shaped treats were boxed for guests.

Kate Donnelly, a Rotary member and the director of the Paul Laurence Dunbar Community Center, designed a table around "Cooking with Edible Flowers" by Miriam Jacobs. Favors included a book of recipes along with potted pansies.

"You can decorate salads with them. You can make jelly out of them," Donnelly told the table guests.

Esta Mae Laughner of Center Township and five friends were seated at Donnelly's table, one of 21 nearly filled to capacity."The originality is amazing," Laughner said of the diverse themes. "In fact, I called home and asked my husband to bring my camera down.""Each one has its own personality," agreed Darlene Farrell of Pittsburgh, who was seated nearby at a bubble gum-pink table themed after a children's book called "Pinkalicious."Although children's books were represented at the tables, a talk also was given by Pittsburgh author Karen Lynn Williams, who writes children's books. Activities also included a 50/50 auction and a used book sale. The $20-a-plate event, which will benefit the Butler County Community College Adult Literacy Program, was at BC3.Money for the grant-funded program, which served more than 400 people last year, is set to decrease by $48,000.
