INTRO TO COMPUTER

William Ellis, computer coordinator for Butler School District, shows students Jill Yaracs, 6, left, Tim Cornetti, 5, Jaloyn Fockler, 6, and Eugene Covert, 5, how to use a Teletype machine April 9, 1975, at Oakland Township School. The Teletype machine was connected to the senior high school's computer by telephone, and Ellis worked with the students to expose them to technology and teach math. Teletypewriters evolved from stock tickers to display text transmitted from place to place using phone lines. While the teletypewriter is largely obsolete these days, the use of technology in the classroom has blossomed and become commonplace. Instead of teletypewriters, students use computers on a daily basis, and teachers use SMART Boards, which are interactive white boards that replace chalkboards. Also, instead of sharing information using printouts, the Internet displays it on a computer screen.
