VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Butler High wrestlers Cole Baxter and Blake Caudill competed in the first day of the National High School Coaches Association Tournament Wednesday.
Baxter, one of 51 wrestlers at 160 pounds, went 3-0 to advance to today's quarterfinals.
He defeated Nick Lobue (N.Y.) 4-1, before pinning Doug Rosell (N.J.) and Josh Villani (Wash.).
At 103 pounds, Caudill pinned Nick Young (S.C.), then lost to Josh Mora (Texas), 5-3.
Eighty wrestlers entered the event at Caudill's weight class.
The tournament runs through Friday.
PITTSBURGH — West Penn Baseball Prospects completed its annual survey of college and junior college baseball rosters and reports that 586 student athletes from the WPIAL and City League currently are participating.Seneca Valley has 26 graduates playing college ball, the most of any WPIAL school. Butler has 16.Division I college baseball players from those schools include Seneca Valley's Kevan Smith and Zach Duggan (Pitt), Kyle Helisek (Villanova), Cory Mazzoni (North Carolina State), Tyler Bream (Liberty) and Nick Kendrick (George Mason), and Butler's Evan Oswald.
STATE COLLEGE — Butler resident and Penn State freshman gymnast Nick Grant was named Big Ten Men's Gymnastics Freshman of the Week for the third time this season.Grant posted a season-high 16.050 in the vault against No. 2 Oklahoma last weekend. He finished fourth in the event behind three of the top vaulters in the nation.Grant has recorded a team-high eight first-place finishes this season: four in the floor exercise, four in the vault.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior women's softball player Jessica Kortz was named Louisville Slugger Division II National Player of the Week by the National Fast-Pitch Coaches Association.The catcher-first baseman was 8-for-11 in the five-game Salem Invitational last weekend, collecting seven runs scored, 16 RBI and five home runs. She became the first PSAC player to gain national honors this season.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Kayla, Kelsey and Kandice Brendlinger of Slippery Rock each claimed Pennsylvania and New York state titles in U.S. Girls Wrestling Association sanctioned tournaments this month.Kayla competed in the high school division and defeated Emily Buck of Pine City, N.Y., 17-4 in the 107-pound Pennsylvania championship match. She also decisioned Buck 14-7 to win the New York state crown and had a 6-0 record in the two tournaments.Kelsey competed in the middle school division and pinned Kashayla Lytle of Troy in 3:40 of their 110-pound Pennsylvania championship match. She decisioned Chelsey Gillen of Nunda, N.Y., 12-2 in the 115-pound New York title match. Kelsey was 5-0 in the tournaments.Kandice competed in the elementary school division and decisioned Haley Walters of Bloomsburg 15-2 in the Pennsylvania title match. She pinned Samantha Friedman of Binghamton, N.Y., in 1:45 in the New York finals. She went 5-0 in the two tournaments.
FINDLAY, Ohio — The Slippery Rock University softball team split a doubleheader against Findlay (Ohio) Wednesday, losing 8-0 in five innings before winning 6-5.The win was highlighted by Jordan Zeunges' two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.Butler High graduate Jenna Geibel had two hits in support of winning pitcher Shauna Walker, who allowed four earned runs on 11 hits in seven innings.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia point guard Darryl "Truck" Bryant will miss tonight's NCAA tournament game after he broke his right foot during practice Tuesday.The second-seeded Mountaineers, who won the Big East tournament, play 11th-seeded Washington tonight at Syracuse, N.Y., in the East Regional semifinals."I feel sorry for Truck that this injury happened during this time of the season," coach Bob Huggins said.Bryant has started 31 games and averages 9.3 points and is second on the team in assists (3.1) and 3-pointers (40).He will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by junior Joe Mazzulla, who is more of a playmaker than a scorer. Mazzulla averages 2.2 points and 2.3 assists per game.

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — Former Major League Baseball star Dwight Gooden was charged Wednesday with driving under the influence of drugs and leaving the scene of an accident.The former pitcher for the New York Mets and New York Yankees had a child in his vehicle at the time of the two-vehicle crash around 9 a.m. Tuesday, Franklin Lakes police Capt. Joseph Seltenrich said.Gooden, 45, also was charged with child endangerment and motor vehicle violations, authorities said. They wouldn't release details, including the type of drugs.
NEW YORK — For all the talk about tightening the postseason, Major League Baseball made only one slight change this year and held off on major revisions.The awkward off-day between Games 4 and 5 of the league championship series will be eliminated. Instead, there will be yet another off-day between the division series and the start of the LCS, the commissioner's office said Wednesday.The overall length of the postseason will not be shortened and the first round will remain best-of-five at least through 2011.
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. — World No. 1 Serena Williams won the 2009 WTA Tour Player of the Year award and also took the Doubles Team of the year honors with sister Venus at a ceremony held Wednesday.U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters captured the Comeback Player of the Year and Karen Krantzcke took the Sportsmanship Award. Melanie Oudin was honored as the Newcomer of the Year, and Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium won the Most Improved Player award.
