CINCINNATI — Slippery Rock High graduate and Vanderbilt University junior guard Jence Rhoads tallied 20 points and seven assists, but the Commodores fell to Xavier 63-62 in the second round of the NCAA Women's Tournament Tuesday.
Rhoads played all 40 minutes and was 8-of-18 shooting. She also had three steals and a blocked shot.
Amber Harris, the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, scored on a layup with 12.3 seconds left to lift Xavier.
Rhoads also was named to the All-Southeastern Conference team.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University junior track star Allison Smith was honored Tuesday as the PSAC Female Track Athlete of the Week after her performance at the season-opening Coastal Carolina Invitational last week.Smith won the 400-meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1 minute, 2.27 seconds and placed second in the 100 hurdles at 14.9.Smith then closed the meet by running a leg on SRU's 1,600 relay team, which took second place at 3:55.61.
ORLANDO, Fla. — The NFL has changed its overtime rules for playoff games.Starting next season, if a team wins the coin toss and then kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball. If the game becomes tied again after that next series, play will continue under the current sudden-death rules.Should the team winning the toss immediately score a touchdown, then the game is over.Team owners voted 28-4 on Tuesday in favor of the proposal at the NFL meetings. Minnesota, Buffalo, Cincinnati and Baltimore were against the change.
