Boylan acquires, remodels the former Spang mansion
CONNOQUENESSING TWP — Dozens of trees at 856 Evans City Road have been felled in recent weeks and scaffolding has been erected around the building.
The former Spang mansion, which has been a bed-and-breakfast and a photography studio, is being remodeled, but the new owner, Boylan Funeral Home, is tight-lipped about what it will be.
"We're currently putting together a business plan, so it will be some time before that is decided," said Adam Boylan, one of the family's third-generation owner-operators.
"But, it's going to be very unique, one of the only facilities in Pennsylvania of its kind."
Boylan Funeral Home operates two locations.
The family bought the funeral home on Main Street in Evans City in 1960 and, in 1986, opened a second location on Grandview Avenue in Zelienople.
In addition to the main house, the five-acre Evans City Road property included a large barn, carriage house, machinery shed, chicken pen and smokehouse while it operated as the Copper Penny Manor B & B for the past decade.
A brick driveway loops in front of the house and connects all the buildings.
The red brick house was built by the Spang family in 1928 and restored in 2000 by the Phil Hixon family, owners of the now-closed bed-and-breakfast.
