BHS trial team moves to state level
The Butler High School mock trial team has advanced to state competition after winning at the regional level Tuesday night.
High school teams from northwestern Pennsylvania gathered at Butler County Courthouse Tuesday night for the regional competition. Butler had advanced to that event by beating Seneca Valley in the district competition weeks ago.
With Butler's win Tuesday over Fort LeBouef High School of Erie County, the team qualifies for state competition March 26 and 27 in Harrisburg. There it will compete with eight other teams.
With a good showing at Harrisburg, the team could move on to national competition in May.
This year's hypothetical case focuses on the murder of a financial analyst employed by a Philadelphia investment firm.
The Butler mock trial team, an after-school club, began four years ago is led by John Lesjack, a social studies teacher at the intermediate high school, and David Cooper. The attorney adviser is Michael Gallagher.
Student participants are Patrick Fitz, Shannon Gallagher, Stefan Kemp, Madison Kerr, Mara Shingleton, David Thompson, Zach Tomasovic and Steven Wuchina.
