John "Jack" Melvin Barnes, 79, of Butler, loving husband and father, passed away Saturday at the Good Samaritan Hospice Unit in Cabot after losing his courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born Jan. 19, 1931, in Fenelton, the son of the late Calvin and Mary Katherine (Snyder) Barnes.

Jack was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Butler.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served from April 1956 to February 1958, during the Korean War, in Germany.

He was a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. He was employed by Pullman Standard for 19 years and retired from BMI in 1993.

Jack was a loving husband and father who enjoyed spending time at the beach and with his family, which was the most important thing to him. He enjoyed driving truck for a living, so ... Keep the hammer down and keep on trucking. We love you and you will be missed more than you will ever know.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou (Baumgart) Barnes, who he married Sept. 6, 1958; a son, Timothy J. and Brenda Barnes of Butler; a daughter, Jerry and Sonya (Barnes) Huf of Butler; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild, Michael, Sarah (Barnes) and Caleb Egan, John and Dustin Barnes and Kyrie, Jerry and Logan Huf; a sister, Roberta and Anthony Neff of Chicora; and a brother, Robert and Deborah Barnes of Butler.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.
