'Fibers & Metals' Exhibit at BC3 features 5 artists

Work by Pittsburgh artist Frances Frederick represents the fiber portion of the "Fibers & Metals" exhibit opening March 4 in the Mary Hulton Phillips Gallery at Butler County Community College.

BUTLER TWP — Starting March 4 in the Mary Hulton Phillips Gallery at Butler County Community College will be "Fibers & Metals: Recent Work By Five Artists"

The exhibit will feature work by the artists Frances Frederick, Nora Gales, Susan Changnon, Jessica Grayburn and Barbara Rimmel.

An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. March 4. The art gallery is in the Cultural Center on the first floor of the Science and Technology Building, adjacent to the Succop Theater.

The fiber in the exhibit is work by Frederick of Pittsburgh. She has more than 700 hours of instruction in visual arts and fine crafts.

She draws and paints, has a working knowledge of ceramics and printmaking, and has designed and produced various art quilts.

Frederick served as the executive director of the Associated Arts of Pittsburgh from 1993 to 2001.

She will display her contemporary quilts in this exhibit.

The other four artists in the exhibit represent the metals with their jewelry.

Gales of New Castle often combines common objects and materials to create new compositions.

Her work includes machine parts attached to background materials of rusted metal. Her pieces are meant to be worn as functional jewelry, but can be viewed as small sculptures.Changnon of Grove City has studied metalsmithing and beading at the Appalachian Rock Shop in Zelienople for the past five years with artist and teacher Jolan Naleppa.She exhibited her jewelry in a group show at the Bottlebrush Gallery in Harmony last fall.Changnon is interested in fossils, natural found objects and simple metal treatments using ammonites, agates, jasper, turquoise and Wooly Mammoth bone beads for her jewelry.Changnon is also the director of communications and marketing at BC3.Grayburn of Cranberry Township has had an interest in jewelry since she was a child. Her initial experience was with macramé and hemp, and she now uses stones, beads, cords and wires to create a variety of pieces.She earned a bachelor of arts degree in visual design and merchandising from La Roche College in 2005 and is currently enrolled in the fine arts program at BC3.Rimmel of Worthington combines objects and motifs from nature as a theme within her work.She uses natural elements including feathers, sea shells and wood along with manmade objects to create pieces that are functional as jewelry or can be appreciated as hanging works of art.Rimmel is most inspired by nature and has gained experience in creating found object jewelry. She is enrolled in BC3's fine arts program.Gallery hours are 7 to 8 p.m. March 19, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 26 and 27 and 1 to 2 p.m. March 28, and by appointment. Jewelry by Susan Changnon of Grove City will be among the work of five artists shown March 4 to 31 in the Mary Hulton Phillips Gallery at Butler County Community College.
