Unity helps tourney to fall together
Kudos to the WPIAL.
This is usually the time of year when high school basketball teams and their fans complain incessantly about their tournament matchups and where they're being forced to play.
Not this time.
Because of all the weather postponements, the WPIAL Basketball Committee had only a few hours to figure out where and when 161 teams were going to play.
Those teams had to be seeded, first-round matchups had to be nonsection and no games could be scheduled Friday, condensing two days of games into one.
That meant finding schools willing to play host to quadruple-headers this Saturday.
Butler is one of those host schools. North Allegheny, Chartiers Valley, Fox Chapel, Gateway, Keystone Oaks, North Hills and Baldwin are others joining in for the fun.
This schedule encompasses a lot of people working long hours to get this tournament off the ground on time.
Seeing school districts and officials come together for a common cause is an uplifting thing.
Olympic fever — catch it.Our fascination with the Winter Games — despite few of us being able to identify with any of the sports except hockey — is understandable.Sports in their purest form remain the most attractive sports of all.We don't know the names of most of the athletes we're watching and we'll forget all about them once the Games are over. But we love why they're competing and what they're doing.Downhill skiing, speedskating, the luge — whatever your preference — the danger factor lurks in winter sports, and that alone keeps us riveted.Combine that with the emotion of winning for your country and it's must-see TV.
With the NHL trade deadline approaching, the Penguins are looking to add a scoring winger to their roster.Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin have figured in 32 of the team's last 35 goals. Mike Rupp and Ruslan Fedotenko haven't scored in forever. The Penguins are good, but they do need a little more balance in the goal-scoring department.
Anyone who still doesn't believe the Big East is the king of college basketball, guess again. In what was supposed to be a down year for the league, five Big East teams — Villanova, Syracuse, West Virginia, Georgetown and Pitt — are ranked among the Top 20.Four of those are ranked among the top 10 and Pitt, picked to finish ninth in the Big East, is ranked 19th in the country. In the span of four days, three Big East teams ranked among the top six in the country suffered upset losses — to other Big East teams. No other conference in the nation can even approach such a scenario.John Enrietto is sports editor of the Butler Eagle.
