Giving more to BC3
BUTLER TWP — Ashley Campbell already has turned in a successful volleyball season at Butler County Community College.
She hammered home 232 kills to help the Pioneers to a sixth-place finish at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III National Championships in the fall.
This winter, the freshman has provided scoring and rebounding punch for the BC3 women's basketball team, which will compete in the play-in round of the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference playoffs tonight.
For Campbell, success on both courts was expected.
"I knew what I was getting into," the Karns City graduate said. "I wasn't really surprised."
Campbell's confidence comes from experience.
As a senior at Karns City, Campbell led the Gremlins in scoring with 19.6 points per game and in rebounding with 10 per contest.
She also was an 80-percent free-throw shooter.
At 5-foot-10, Campbell did most of that damage at forward, playing predominantly in the post.
For the Pioneers, Campbell has to learn a new position and a new way of playing as a guard.
"I had to work on my ball handling a lot," Campbell said. "It was pretty difficult because last year I didn't handle the ball a lot."
Campbell also had to hone her outside shooting skills.
The Pioneers were looking for someone to take on the bulk of the scoring.
"We've got some people who can do it," said BC3 coach Sean Carroll before the season. "But someone has to step into the forefront there."
Campbell was one of the players who stepped forward.
She scored 31 and 29 points in two wins over CCAC-South and has been a consistent offensive threat for the Pioneers (4-10).
The biggest adjustment she had to make was with the speed of the junior college game.
"The biggest difference from high school to here was probably the shot clock," Campbell said. "In high school, you can hold the ball as long as you needed. Here, you only have a certain amount of time before it is a turnover. That was a huge adjustment."
What Campbell had no problem adjusting to was her new teammates. All but one player on the roster is from Butler County.
Campbell's former teammate at Karns City, Kati Weibel, also is on the team.
"It's really cool to play with Kati again," Campbell said. "It was nice to play with some of the players in the county who I knew or read about."
Campbell said she will return to BC3 next season to play volleyball and basketball.
After that, she hopes to continue playing one or both sports at a four-year college.
Unsure about a major, Campbell is taking classes and having fun.
"I've been playing all my life," Campbell said. "I knew I wanted to keep playing after high school. I just didn't know where.
"I haven't figured out a major yet," Campbell added. "When I do, I will look around and pick a college, and, hopefully, I can play there, too."
