NEWARK, N.J. — The Atlanta Thrashers traded Ilya Kovalchuk and defenseman Anssi Salmela to the New Jersey Devils Thursday night for right winger Niclas Bergfors, defenseman Johnny Oduya, prospect Patrice Cormier and a first-round pick.The 26-year-old Kovalchuk, set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1, turned down the Thrashers' 12-year, $101 million extension offer.Since the Thrashers drafted him No. 1 overall in 2001, Kovalchuk leads the NHL with 328 goals, but Atlanta has made just one playoff appearance and has never won a postseason game.
DALLAS — Financially strapped owner Tom Hicks is exploring a possible sale of the Dallas Stars.The Hicks Sports Group said Thursday the NHL team has retained Galatioto Sports Partners to look for new investors and explore the idea of selling a majority stake in the Stars.Team president Jeff Cogen said a sale is not a certainty.Last year, Hicks defaulted on a loan backed by the Stars and baseball's Texas Rangers. Hicks recently reached an agreement to sell the Rangers to a group led by Pittsburgh attorney Chuck Greenberg. The sale awaits approval from Major League Baseball.
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Oaklawn Park is throwing $5 million at star females Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta to meet for the first time at the Apple Blossom in April.The racetrack in Hot Springs, Ark., announced Thursday that the owners of both champion horses are receptive to the idea. No firm commitments have been made.Rachel Alexandra won 2009 Horse of the Year honors over Zenyatta.

John McCain introduced legislation requiring manufacturers of dietary supplements to register with the Food and Drug Administration and to disclose the ingredients.The Arizona Republican said Thursday that, if passed, the measure would give the FDA authority for a mandatory recall if a product is found to be unsafe.Baseball commissioner Bud Selig urged adoption of the bill.
