SELF-DEFENSE CLASSES
David Kang demonstrates a self-defense move on Butler YWCA physical education director Mrs. James McElhaney on Jan. 25, 1972, to promote a 10-week self-defense course slated to start Feb. 9 of that year. Kang, of the Squirrel Hill neighborhood in Pittsburgh and a native of Seoul, Korea, was a fourth-degree black belt in Judo and a second-degree black belt in Hapkido, both of which would be incorporated into his training sessions. The beginner classes taught how to defend oneself against attacks and armed opponents.
