Tax incentives good deal

Concerning the front-page article "Tax breaks for businesses questioned" in the Jan. 17 edition of the Butler Eagle, I feel the tax incentives extended to Westinghouse Electric are fair, justified and morally correct. They are one of the few bright spots in our local economy.

I am pleased with the Westinghouse expansion in Cranberry Township. The company has exceeded its commitment regarding the number of jobs provided.

With any luck, the company's hiring practices will return it to its role as a major local employer.

The article neglected to mention all the levels of government that contributed to the deal to entice Westinghouse to move from Monroeville to Cranberry, and not to North Carolina or South Carolina. Also neglected was the amount of estimated state and local taxes paid out of the paychecks of the 4,000 new Westinghouse workers, as well as the money spent at local businesses by these additional employees.

A comparison of the total tax incentives given versus the additional tax revenue collected would show what a good deal these tax incentives are.

The report on which the article is based is available on the Web site of Good Jobs First: www.goodjobs-first.org. It is not a government agency. The study was funded by the not-for-profit Heinz Endowment.
