SHALER TWP — Add another dimension to Olivia Bresnahan's game.

Butler's senior guard tallied 17 points, 11 rebounds, eight steals and four assists in the Golden Tornado's 56-46 girls basketball win at previously unbeaten Shaler Wednesday night.

In the process, she drew a number of fouls that hurt the Titans.

"Olivia Bresnahan is a tremendous player. She's tough to handle. ... We didn't handle her," Shaler coach Eric Mozzetti said.

Three Shaler players — Cate Potter and leading scorers Haley and Hilary Sauer — fouled out in the fourth quarter.

The Titans also suffered 26 turnovers.

"Olivia does so many things that don't show up in the box score," Butler coach Dorothea Epps said. "She was all over the floor tonight."

Butler (6-5, 4-0) snapped a 12-12 tie with a Casie Cygan layup in the final seconds of the first quarter. The Tornado never trailed again — but Shaler made it interesting.

A fast-break layup by Casey Fleeger and a Katresa Savisky free throw capped a 7-0 run that gave Butler its biggest lead — 42-29 — with 2:12 left in the third period.

Shaler (10-1, 4-1) pulled within four points with 2:23 left in the game.

"We didn't turn the ball over during that stretch," Mozzetti said. "When we held onto the ball, we were effective."

Butler continued to be ineffective at the foul line, sinking 19 of 38 free throws. But for the second consecutive game, the Tornado sank free throws to salt away a close game in the closing moments.

Cygan hit a free throw with 2:11 to play. After Shaler's Shannon Powell sank a free throw on the other end with 1:52 left, the Titans trailed by four points again.

Emily Wise sank a free throw, Mackenzie O'Donnell nailed two and Cygan three to give Butler an insurmountable 10-point lead with 48 seconds remaining.

"We just can't seem to figure it out," Epps said of her team's foul-shooting woes. "As long as we keep sinking them when we need them, we're OK. But we clearly have to get better at the line."

Bresnahan was only 7-of-17 from the line, but the rest of her game was on target. She played just over a quarter in Saturday's win at North Allegheny because of foul trouble.

"I can't stand sitting on the bench," Bresnahan said. "I have to play. This game was fast-paced and that's my favorite kind of game.

"We like playing that way as a team. We're good at reading the eyes of the other team working the ball up the floor, get in their passing lanes and get in transition the other way."

Cygan had 16 points and eight rebounds for Butler. O'Donnell had nine points and Savisky had eight.

O'Donnell and Caitlin Baxter — both freshmen — were in Butler's starting lineup.

"I knew neither was going to play the whole game, but they're young, talented players who needed experience playing in a game like this."

Haley Sauer had 16 points while Hilary Sauer added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Titans.
