SLIPPERY ROCK — Kourtney Rhoads planted her feet, locked her eyes on the rim and lofted a high-arcing shot that found nothing but net.

That scene played out over and over again for the Slippery Rock High girls basketball team against Titusville at home Monday night.

Rhoads hit six of the Rockets' 13 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 22 points as Slippery Rock rolled to a 74-38 region win.

"I can't describe it," Rhoads said. "When the first one goes in, I just know so will the next one and the next one."

A streaky shooter in the past, Rhoads has been consistent this season.

Last year, she led Butler County with 56 3-pointers but averaged a shade under 12 points per game.

This season, Rhoads already has 28 3-pointers and is averaging 16.2 points

Rhoads hit all four of her 3-point attempts in the first half to help Slippery Rock build a 51-19 lead.

Five Slippery Rock players hit at least one 3-pointer in the game. Karly Rhoads had four and Sarah Cessar, Taylor Crocker and Adele Campbell each had one.

With so many potent outside shooters, Slippery Rock opponents have found it hard to keep up with the Rockets.

After Kourtney Rhoads hit a 3-pointer to give Slippery Rock a 38-17 lead midway through the second quarter, Titusville coach Greg Houck turned to his bench and said, "They are going to score 100 points on us."

Not quite, but the bombing display did elicit some shock and awe — from the fans, Titusville and even the Rockets themselves.

"I looked up at the scoreboard and couldn't believe how many points we had," Kourtney Rhoads said.

The points have come by no accident.

The Rockets (9-1, 3-0) have reached 50 points or more by halftime in three games this season.

A swarming defense that forces plenty of turnovers and crisp passing has set up Slippery Rock shooters with more than their fair share of open looks, said Rockets coach Adrienne Orris said.

"We're not taking any forced shots," Orris said. "We've stressed defense for three years because our offense feeds off our defense."

By the time Slippery Rock built its biggest lead of the game — 35 points early in the fourth quarter — the Rockets sharp shooters started heading to the bench.

"At this point, we just can't be satisfied," Orris said. "We're still not where we need to be come March."
