BUFFALO TWP — Darius Frantz turned the Davies Bowl in favor of the father.

The Freeport senior forward shook off early foul trouble to post a 12-point, 15-rebound night to help the Yellowjackets pull away from visiting Leechburg in the second half on the way to a 67-36 boys basketball win Wednesday night.

The game featured father against son; Garrie Davies returned to the Freeport bench this season after a five-year hiatus while his son, Damian, brought his Leechburg team to town.

"When (Damian) got the job (at Leechburg), I was retired," the elder Davies said. "He's supposed to come over for some food, win or lose."

Frantz, who also had six blocked shots, made sure it was a win.

While he was in foul trouble in the first half, Leechburg managed to stay close to Freeport, leading 10-9 after the first quarter and keeping within a point with a little more that two minutes remaining in the second quarter.

The second half was a different story.

With Frantz back on the court with his tall, lanky frame and jackrabbit leaping ability, Freeport outscored Leechburg 23-8 in the third period and 39-12 in the second half.

Frantz scored eight of his 12 points in the third quarter, including two thunderous, rim-rattling slam dunks.

"He's a game-changer inside," Damian Davies said. "He got into a little foul trouble and that allowed us to take a little bit of advantage. We try to pull him out of the way so we can have room to operate. But he's so rangy and smart and he's coming across the lane and changing shots — after a couple of blocks and the crowd goes wild, it does take its toll."

Alex Isenberg also contributed to the Leechburg woes in the second half.

After a cold start from the field in the first half, Isenberg warmed up in the second half, hitting 5-of-7 from the floor in the final two quarters to finish with a game-high 16 points.

Four Freeport players finished in double digits. Tyler Collins added 12 points and Jake Campbell 11 for the Yellowjackets (6-4).

But the night belonged to Frantz.

"He's learning every day," Garrie Davies said. "He hasn't played a lot in the last couple of years, but he wants to learn. We've been real pleased with his progress."

The night also belonged to family — namely a father-son game of basketball.

"I coached with my father for five years," the younger Davies said. "He was with me in Leechburg, helping with scouting. We talked so much about basketball. My father does such a great job keeping friendships and closeness with people.

"We're competitive people," Damian Davies added. "This is a competitive game, but you always maintain your character. That's one of the things he taught me."
