Philanthropist, leader Phillips passes away
Mary Hulton Phillips, known for her philanthropy and leadership in the community, died Jan. 19 at her Belmont Road home. She was 88.
She had a long history of giving, which she began shortly after her marriage to Donald C. Phillips in 1944. He was the grandson of T.W. Phillips, the founder of T.W. Phillips Gas and Oil. Her husband preceded her in death Oct. 10, 1994.
A collection of more than 800 antiques was moved from her home in 2004 to the $2.5 million Maridon Museum on McKean Street that she had built. Her extensive collection of Japanese ivories, Chinese ivories and jades, and German Meissen figures attracts visitors from across the country.
