1 killed, 2 injured in Butler Twp. accident

BUTLER TWP — One man died and two other people were badly hurt Friday afternoon when a septic pumping truck crashed on McCalmont Road.

Killed in the accident was Thomas Goessling, 52, of Gibsonia, according to Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr, who pronounced Goessling dead at the scene.

An autopsy done Friday night confirmed Goessling died of chest injuries, Barr said.

The survivors, a man and a woman, were flown by medical helicopters to Pittsburgh hospitals.

Their identities had not been released by township police as of this morning, and their conditions were unknown.

Investigators said they believe the late-model red truck, which was carrying a load, had recently completed a job in the area.

It was traveling north on McCalmont about 2 p.m. Just after crossing over the B&O Railroad tracks, the truck went off the road at a bend. It came to rest on its side on the hillside.

Rescuers used stokes baskets to lift the two survivors from the wreckage to ambulances on the road. They were moved to Route 8 before being transferred to medical helicopters.

McCalmont Road was shut down for several hours to help the victims, to investigate the circumstances and to clear the wreckage. Investigators remained there until after dark.

To right the truck and to tow it from the hillside, officials said the liquid load had to be removed.

In addition to fire and medical personnel, officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and HAZMAT were at the scene.
