SLIPPERY ROCK — Jeremy Deighton scored a hat trick on three headers, including the game-winner with 1:32 left in the second overtime, as the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team defeated Mercyhurst 3-2 Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament.
SRU (18-3-1), which set a school record for wins, will host third-seeded Charleston (W.Va.) in the regional final at 2 p.m. Sunday at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
SRU and Mercyhurst had gone 1-1-1 against each other in the regular season.
Goalie Greg Blum made 14 saves for The Rock. Mercyhurst (14-6-1) had a 31-21 advantage in shots, including 17-8 in shots on goal, and a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Kenneth Fultz's corner kick went to Deighton, whose header just inside the far post was the difference.
SRU advances to the round of 16 for the second time in school history. The team had lost to Millersville 1-0 last year.
ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Butler County Community College volleyball team dropped a 25-14, 25-16, 25-16 decision to Ridgewater (Minn.) in the first round of the NJCAA Division II National Championship Friday.However, the Pioneers bounced back with a 25-16, 25-22, 17-25, 25-17 victory over Nassau County (N.J.) in the afternoon.BC3 (18-11), which is ranked 10th nationally, will face Niagara in the fourth-place match at 10 a.m. Saturday.
