MIAMI — For NASCAR fans who love to fish — has Darrell Gwynn got a deal for you!

For the eighth year in a row, the paralyzed former racecar driver plans to raise money for his foundation to cure paralysis by holding the Hot Rods and Reels Fishing Tournament on the infield lake at Homestead-Miami Speedway Nov. 21.

For $5,000, you and a friend will get to spend several hours fishing for largemouth and peacock bass with a professional guide and NASCAR drivers such as Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart and other celebrities in town for Ford Championship Weekend. It's a small lake, so there's plenty of interaction among the fleet of 20 boats.

"It's serious fishing, but it's unique," Gwynn said. "For a person dying to spend a few minutes with their favorite NASCAR driver, they are stuck with them on the boat. They get to ask them questions and see a different side of them. This is not a personal appearance, not a job for them. They're here to have fun and raise money."

Bass Pro Shops will furnish guides, fishing rods and tackle. All you have to do is show up. Gwynn says The Outdoor Channel will tape the event.

Gwynn, who was paralyzed in a 1990 racing accident, runs a foundation out of his Davie office that donates custom wheelchairs to patients in need. The tournament has raised more than $600,000 for that organization, as well as the Betty Jane France Pediatric Unit, or Speediatrics, at Homestead Hospital.

A second Hot Rods and Reels Tournament will be held Feb. 13 in the infield lake at Daytona International Speedway.
