Drug suspect waives preliminary hearing
A suspected drug dealer faces possible trial in Butler County Court for allegedly selling more than a dozen bags of heroin to a police informant.
Matthew Souverin, 26, who has no known address, on Monday waived his preliminary hearing in the case before District Judge Pete Shaffer.
Souverin, who also goes by the street name "Country," is charged with two counts each of delivery of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.
The Butler County Drug Task Force filed the charges last week following a pair of controlled drug buys in Butler in September.
The defendant on Sept. 15 allegedly sold two stamp bags of heroin to a confidential informant, who paid $40, according to court documents.
Three days later, investigators said, he sold the informant 11 bags of heroin for $140.
Butler County Detective Pat Cannon, who heads the drug task force, characterized the suspect as a "fairly substantial street dealer." He said authorities began investigating the defendant in August after hearing about him from sources, who knew him by his street name.
Officers arrested Souverin Nov. 2 after the state police crime lab in Westmoreland County analyzed the drugs. He was arraigned and placed in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail. After waiving the charges to court Monday, Shaffer agreed to reduce the defendant's bail to $25,000. He still remains jailed.
