Sims

Paul R. Sims, 85, of Worthington died Tuesday at ACMH Hospital.

Born Feb. 8, 1924, in Karns City, he was the son of William J. and Luella Mae Savage Sims.

He worked as a laborer for Armstrong Cement, formerly Penn Dixie Cement, until his retirement.

He served his country in the Army during World War II from March 1943 until November 1945. During this time, he spent 17 months in German prisoner-of-war camps after being wounded and captured while on patrol with the 4th Ranger Battalion in Italy. Paul escaped from Stalag 11B and was met by English recon and armored cars, taken to England for recuperation and finally home to the United States and honorably discharged Nov. 22, 1945.

He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal, a Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal and a Sharpshooter Medal.

Paul was a life member of the former VFW in Kittanning, the Polish Falcon C.U. Club in Ford City and a life member of the Sarver Veteran's Club.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter and also enjoyed camping, being outdoors and playing cards. All will miss his very slow excursions along Buffalo Creek.

Surviving are his daughters, Judy (Thomas) Logan of Sarver, Nancy (Keith) McDermott of Kittanning and Cathy Sims of Slate Lick; his granddaughters, Jennifer Saffold of Dothan, Ala., and Sara Logan of Sarver, four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; two sisters, LaDora Sims of Craigsville and Luella (Lynn) Smock of Freeport; his loved companion, Violet O. Roofner of Worthington; lifetime friend, Dorothy Sims Keener; and Violet's children, Herbert (Betty) Hooks, Prudence (John) Burke and Amos (Linda) Hooks and their families.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, LaVerne Sims and Charles Sims; a sister, Beatrice Miller; and two infant brothers.

<B>SIMS </B>— Friends of Paul R. Sims, who died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the <B>Fox Funeral Home</B>, 410 W. Main St., Saxonburg. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
