Bier

Marie E. Bier, 97, formerly of North Chestnut Street, died Sunday at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

The eldest of eight children, she was born Aug. 21, 1912, in Anita, Jefferson County, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Shaftic Morris.

Marie was a 1932 graduate of SS. Cosmas and Damian Catholic High School.

She married James A. Bier Jr. on June 26, 1939, at the St. Adrian Catholic Church in Adrian.

She formerly had worked as a sales clerk and was in charge of the toy department and paint department at the A.E. Troutman department store in Butler for 13 years. She also had worked as a nurses aide at Butler Memorial Hospital and at Krauses Bakery.

She was a member of the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Butler. As a devout Catholic, she was a past member of the St. Paul Guild and Christian Mothers and the St. Paul Altar Society.

She had volunteered at VA Butler Healthcare with the Navy Mothers, at the St. Paul School in the cafeteria and had been a Girl Scout leader at St. Paul School for Troop 6.

Marie will be fondly remembered for her hospitality and baking and was well known for her homemade butter cookies and sea foam icing. She enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening, and especially being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marie's husband, James A. Bier Jr., preceded her in death March 7, 2006.

She will be held in the hearts of her family members who survive: three daughters, Martha (John) Samson of Mississippi, Joan Adamo of Butler and Susan Bier of Rhode Island; a son, James A. (Deborah) Bier III of Renfrew; 10 grandchildren, Scott (Lois) Samson, Steven Samson, Christine Adamo, Laura (Daniel) Wracker, Charles M. (Jennifer) Adamo, Tierrah (Michael) Byers, Melissa (Wilde) Paule, Ashley (Adam) Benjamin, Braden Bier and Angela Panei; six great-grandchildren, Christopher, Jenna and Luke Wracker, Andrew Samson, Grant and Max Byers; a brother, John Morris of Buffalo, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

<B>BIER </B>— There will be no visitation. Family and friends of Marie E. Bier, who died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, may attend a Mass of Christian burial that will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Thursday at the St. Paul Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St., Butler. Entombment will follow at the Greenlawn Burial Estates Mausoleum, Mount Chestnut.The St. Paul Guild and Christian Mothers will recite the rosary at 12:40 p.m. Thursday at the church.Memorial donations may be sent to either St. Paul Catholic Church or the Butler Public Library.Arrangements are being handled by the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, and information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
