Wolf Creek marks 200th anniversary

Wolf Creek Presbyterian Church will celebrate its 200th anniversary with a special service at 11 a.m. Sunday. Former members, friends of the congregation and community members are invited. The church was formally organized in 1809 as Mouth of Wolf Creek.

WORTH TWP — Wolf Creek Presbyterian Church, 344 Creek Drive, will celebrate its 200th anniversary with a special service and sacrament of the Lord's Supper beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday. Former members, friends of the congregation and community members are invited.

Leading the service will be commissioned lay pastor Mark Frailey. The morning message will be delivered by the Rev. Alan Adams, executive presbyter of the Beaver-Butler Presbytery. Also participating will be the Rev. Edwin and Mrs. Audrey Carlson and the Rev. Jack Patterson.

Guests are invited to a luncheon after the service.

The church began in May of 1807 with six families gathering under an oak tree along the banks of Wolf Creek near the present site of the church.

The church was formally organized in 1809 as Mouth of Wolf Creek, but continued to meet under the tree until 1811, when a log church was built.

By 1838 the congregation had outgrown the log church, which accidentally burned during an expansion. A new building was constructed and remained in use until 1906, when work on the present building began. It was completed in 1907. A basement was added in 1956.

The church also has been known as Slippery Rock United Presbyterian Church, Slippery Rock United Presbyterian Church of Moore's Corners, Wolf Creek United Presbyterian Church and Wolf Creek Presbyterian Church USA.

The church is on Route 108, four miles west of Slippery Rock and one mile east of I-79.
