PINE TWP — There might not be ice water running through Will Hugo's veins just yet, but he's still a cool customer.

Seneca Valley's senior kicker drilled a 51-yard field goal with 30 seconds left in the game to lift the Raiders to an improbable 19-17 win over host Pine-Richland Friday night.

Thanks to North Allegheny's win over Butler, the Raiders, who trailed 17-0 entering the final quarter, clinched a WPIAL Quad A playoff berth with the win.

Down by a point at 17-16, the Raiders (4-4, 2-2) took over at their own 15-yard line with 1:15 to go.

Quarterback Donny Holl completed passes to Andrew Smith (15 yards), Jordan Glaser (15) and Troy Witt (17) to advance to the Rams 34-yard line before three incompletions brought fourth down.

"We wanted to get one more first down to make it a more reasonable try," said SV coach Don Holl. "We were even thinking about going for it on fourth down. But we asked Will if he thought he could make it."

"During that last drive, I kept hoping it wouldn't come down to me," said Hugo. "I told the coaches I thought I could make it. I was a bit nervous, but I had the wind with me and that gave me more confidence."

The 51-yarder surpasses Hugo's 50-yarder in a win over North Hills Oct. 9 for the longest boot in school history.

He also kicked a 43-yarder Friday that cut the Rams' lead to 17-10 with just under four minutes left in the game.

"We knew their kid had a good leg. We saw him kick a couple long ones against North Hills," said Rams coach Clair Altemus. "We gave him that last one with the wind at his back and that didn't help matters."

Hugo's kick capped a nightmare of a fourth quarter for Altemus and his team.

The coach watched as an apparent touchdown that would have put the Rams up 23-7 midway through the fourth quarter was called back on a holding penalty.

Three plays later, SV's Luke Mueller intercepted Eric Kordenbrock at the Raiders 5 and returned it 25 yards before a P-R personal foul penalty moved the ball to the SV 45.

That sequence led to Hugo's first field goal, but the Raiders still trailed 17-10 with 3:59 to go.

The kicker then recovered his own onside kick and set the Raiders up for a 6-play, 52-yard drive that was capped by Donny Holl's 2-yard run.

Coach Holl elected to go for two points, but Witt was smothered on a rushing attempt.

With 2:18 remaining, the Raiders trailed 17-16.

"Pine-Richland (3-5, 1-3) didn't do much on offense in the second half, aside from a few first downs," Coach Holl said. "I believed if we didn't get the two, we would get the ball back."

And they did.

P-R's Justin Williams, who opened the scoring with a 90-yard run in the first quarter, was given the ball three times and lost a combined one yard before the Rams punted, setting up the game-winning drive.

"If I had to put money on it, I'd say our kids did think the game was over," said Altemus. "But up by 17 points, you have to put the nail in the coffin and we didn't."

For the second straight week, SV's offense was anemic in the first half, gaining just 59 yards.

Donny Holl finally got the Raiders on the board with a 1-yard scoring run early in the final quarter.

"We were in a funk," said Coach Holl. "The offensive line was not playing with confidence, our quarterback was struggling. But I told our kids that I believed we were good enough to make the playoffs, so let's go out and do it."

The Raiders host Butler next Friday for the Butler Eagle Traveling Trophy.
